Another Step Today

I added a Kali Yantra, and the figure from Tarot Key 8, Strength. I will alter those to make them my own. I also have to work on a lot of various parts of the painting, but I am glad to have found the additional images that I wanted. When I am looking for images to add to a painting, it is a case of "I'll know it when I see it." I look through all sorts of books and webpages, and finally something just clicks.

Betsy's Serpent

I used a technique I found in Nancy Reyner's book Acrylic Innovation. This is not the smoothest application, but I hope I will improve. The technique involves a mixture of 1:5 paint with soft gel gloss, in a squeeze bottle. I am really curious how it will look when it is dry. It will probably be somewhat transparent, because gel dries clear. It will probably also be darker in tone, and the dots and lines will shrink somewhat.

Yes, I know his face is blue right now.  This painting is 60"H x 36"W. It takes a lot of time just to cover the canvas with paint! This is a dream image, and it has a way to go before it is finished, but it is a pretty good start.

A Cooling

I worked on all five of these paintings today, and the result is much cooler coloration than that of yesterday (sigh). I will work some warm colors back in later, but the underlying warm tones give force to the greens and blues that they would not otherwise possess.

Mass Production ... Kinda

I have to find more than one image to paint at one time, so I have been sifting through my photos and sketches, especially my iPad drawings, because they were done from some of the most appealing shots I took in Yellowstone.

I have one more red panel to do, and it will be a closeup of some plants in a nursery. A bit of a departure from my landscape production. I am planning to throw in a few paintings of other subjects to keep things interesting.

This is all new to me, so I am learning as I go, like do I choose all similar palettes, or go with the individual image to guide me for color combinations, as I would have in the past?

I really like this piece so I want to preserve its beauty. I have to think about each step carefully, to keep the underlying layers visible and make the overlays harmonious with them.

Soft Gel with Green-Blue Interference

Left: Last night I smoothed a fairly thick layer of soft gel into my small palette and swirled some interference green-blue fluid acrylic into it. It will give it a delicate coloration. My experiments with clear gel have taught me that it does not show nuances because they are too subtle. I will have to put some paint on my clear gel pieces or put them on top of color to have them show up their textures. This will be part of an Archaeology piece.

Right: On a piece of white HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) I have painted swirls of soft gel mixed with interference blue fluid acrylic. I really can't see the blue at all, at this point. I hope it is not too subtle. These skins will be applied to an underlying layer of blue, to give the appearance of clouds. One meaning of pneuma is air, or breath. 

After that, who knows? The pieces will have to suggest their next steps.

The top piece, Archaeology I, is so beautiful to my eye that I cannot bring myself to put another layer on it. I will have to live with it for some time before I know what to do next.

The bottom piece, Archaeology II, is fairly unattractive to me. The banana pudding look is gone, replaced by a shiny vomit appearance. The glittery X is now more visible. In order to create a boundary to pour in the gel, I used masking tape. It was an idea for pouring deeply. However, as the gel dries, it shrinks, pulling the masking tape inward towards the center. Now I am pondering how to build many layers without using a box like I have on the top piece. I considered a gallon milk jug, but that does not have a flat bottom. I will be looking around for a square plastic container that has a flat bottom, and which can be cut down to an inch or two on the sides. It would have to allow the release of the hardened gel. It might involve cutting the container away to get at the piece.

All experimental processes have these problems embedded in them, of course. I have several other ideas forming.

Jean Helion

Jean Helion was an associate of a lot of great artists. He wrote a book titled They Shall Not Have Me, and did lots of work. He was French, but lived in the USA after World War II. My husband is reading the book, and asked about this "famous" artist, but he was never covered in my years of art history. My loss, until now. I like his abstract work a lot. This one is just luscious!

The archaeology piece is slowly turning clear. The golden shards are emerging and the next layer is only days away. What happened to finishing a layer in a day?

Banana Pudding?

This box of banana pudding is still wet gel with some yellow pigment in it. Perhaps one day it will become translucent or, I hope, transparent. I am not holding my breath.

Osprey's Supercollider Dance

The Hadron Supercollider is reopening, so I posted this on Google+ in response to a photo of the monstrous machine, which looks a LOT like Osprey's representation of it in Second Life. She came up with so many wild and wooly ideas, it was hard to keep up! But in honor of the Supercollider and Osprey Therian herself, here is her video from 2008.

I have finally framed two pieces of art, one by Robyn M. Flatley, (above left) dated 2008, part of her Sequencing series, and one by Arielle Masson, (below center) dated 1995, an early piece from her Sacred Geometry series.

Osprey's last self-portrait is up there with those works, as well as some of my sketches and tools.

More Archaeology Experiments


I drew on this little painting with clear tar gel, sprinkled it with gold mica flakes and let it dry overnight. Today I put masking tape around the edges and poured soft gel gloss mixed with water, interference blue and nickel azo yellow onto it. The "after" photo will come in a few days, when this cures and becomes relatively clear.

As the gel dries and cures, it shrinks down, letting the underlying objects (acrylic skins previous made) appear to emerge from a milky sea. I am really enjoying this process.

In my spare time, when I am not painting the small landscapes, I am experimenting with something I am calling "Pneuma", gels poured that form shapes. 

The upper one is gel I smoothed into my small enamel tray, with a couple of other invisible shapes on top of that, and strands of twisted gel over that.

The bottom one was the concentric circles, but the ridges were not high enough to keep the self-leveling gel from overflowing their bounds.

I deepened and brightened the foreground to bring it forward toward the viewer. I don't want to get caught up in what the camera showed. A painting is not a photo, it conveys the feeling of the place (or person or object), and it is not as flat as a photographic image can be.

I will gaze at this piece for some time before I declare it finished, in case some oddity becomes visible to me. I get so accustomed to looking at a painting that I sometimes miss problems that I see when it is too late to correct them.

Clear Tar Gel on a Porcelain Butchers' Tray
The word pneuma keeps popping into my mind, and I want to create a piece that expresses that invisible, ineffable breath of life, spirit of the world, the soul of beingness. I poured this triskelion shape as an attempt to make clouds as they are shaped in Tibetan art, but pouring is really uncontrollable. Maybe as I continue I will understand how best to work with pouring tar gel, but for now, I have to go with the forms it makes. The material is leading me.

Layering Gel Experiment

These gold-laced fragments are from making Osprey's wings. I am saving all my acrylic skin experiments, and trying to use them in new pieces. The lower photo shows these fragments in the shadow box. The first layer of gel is still curing, but once it is really clear I will place these as you see them (or thereabouts) and pour self-leveling gel over them. Where we go from there I have some inkling, but it is just that, a feeling of a thread of an idea.
