Eye Spy

This was a fun spy comedy, with Walter Matthau making life miserable for Ned Beatty, his ex-employer at the CIA.

Travel Peeves

Peeve No. 1 has to do with turn signals. When did they stop putting them on new cars? No one seems to bother with them any more, and it is difficult to pull out into an intersection when the oncoming traffic is not signalling. Even if they are, of course, they may or may not be turning, but STILL ... This is a good reason for outlawing handheld devices being used by drivers.

Peeve No. 2: These days, whether you are traveling or not, if you visit a women's restroom, you may find someone has PEED ON THE SEAT. This is a practice that I find highly offensive. After all, women have harangued men to put the seat UP before peeing and DOWN afterwards, so I would think they would do the same when squatting over the toilet to avoid contact of their buttocks with the seat, but no, they leave their urine for the next woman to clean off, an extremely rude practice.

Peeve No. 3 is also understandable but still a selfish inconsiderate practice. Some people have roller bags with long handles, and they trail the things behind them in lines, so that they and their bags take up 3 feet of space instead of 1. To protect one's ankles from these metal monstrosities is quite a task. Sometimes they roll them alongside, which effectively takes up the room one needs to pass by.

Peeve No. 4  is that when they heave these humongous roller bags into the overhead bin space, they take up so much of it that there is not enough room for other people's bags. This one is understandable when the airline in question has begun charging for checking a bag, but it is still unfriendly.

Libby Braden, Painter ...

My yoga teacher, Constance Braden, has been doing intriguing drawings for several years now, and last week she told me about her sister Libby, who is a painter. They both have a love of the grotesque, and there are threads of similarity in their work. See Libby's work here.

Uru Live Museum Image

The clues for a particular puzzle are incorporated into this stained glass window. I always enjoyed the museum.

BOB'S TRAILER ....

O LALA ... BOB! QUELLE FLAMBEUR!

This was on either the Sundance or the Independent Film Channel (IFC), so I recorded it. It is S L O W ... but wonderfully textured and enjoyable. 1956.

Purteeee!

I really like this leaf. It was even prettier but it was hard to capture the delicate shades.

A Vision from Long Ago ...

Many years ago I had a vision of the universe as a huge web of light in fine filaments connecting me to the All. Every tiny motion made a ripple on one of the threads, so everything I did would affect all life from here to the ends of the Universe. I was momentarily paralyzed, thinking of the responsibilty that implied, but then I realized that everything that happens everywhere in the Universe affects my life as well. It all works out in the end!

I Am in the Pickers' Guild!

Today I had the choice of joining a Guild. Naturally, as I am an apprentice Alchemist, I chose the pickers' guild, which gives me a better chance of gathering the plants I need for my work.

This Age is more fun than any before it, because of the complexity of the society.

Fishing Marina in Sistiana ...

I tried to film myself casting but now I can't click on menus while filming (Second Life Version 2.X is stupid that way). I am not dressed for this activity, but at least I took off my ice skates!

The Great Poodle Fire of 195_

It was a beautiful quilted robe, with its embroidered poodle on the patch pocket. E____ wanted to share it with the world. Her scheme was, to wrap it around the light bulb of a small lamp and put the lamp in the window for all to see.

She pinned the robe around the bulb, lit the lamp, and ran down to tell her sister R____ to come up and see the beautiful glowing poodle design. R____ went dutifully up, but by that time the robe had caught fire. R____ unplugged the lamp and E____ became hysterical in her guilt. The house stood once again.

The Great Davenport Fire of 19__

It was Christmas time at the F______ household and Mother, Father and The Girls were decorating the house. Mother said, "In Williamsburg, they put candles in the windows! We should do that ... it is so charming, beautiful and dignified!"

So Mother, Father and The Girls set about doing just that. They put long tapers into brass candlesticks and placed them on the sills of their plate glass "picture windows". They lit the candles and went outside to admire the lovely glow. It was quite a sight. They settled in for an evening of mild family entertainment and forgot the candles.

It was not a long time later that the curtains caught fire, and the back of the davenport as well. The family rushed into the kitchen for containers of water. One daughter carried water in the wooden salad bowl. Others used water glasses, and they ran back and forth, dashing water on the conflagration until it was out.

The picture window glass had a large crack in it from the heat, and had to be replaced. The davenport was blackened, and the curtains were ruined. A singed smell hung in the air. The family was relieved that no one had been burned, and the house stood.

Then someone remembered there was a fire extinguisher in the closet they had all passed by on their way to and from the kitchen with the water "buckets"!

Mother's Toaster Fire ...

Fire in Sink ... not the original in the story ... sadly!
Our family had a history with domestic fires; one of my mother's favorite anecdotes was of Dad rushing into the kitchen excitedly telling her the Green Bay Packers had just scored. In the kitchen sink beside my mother was a flaming toaster. The fire was licking the bottom of the cupboards, so the flames were about 3 feet high. He never noticed the fire.

The Toaster I Would Make ...

Antique electric (?) toaster ... sans cord?
The dude in the TED video was all gung-ho about having to have plastic on his toaster, as that is the form toasters have now. However, in my memory there were metal-only toasters. For this model one would need only steel and copper, and if it were I making the toaster, I would find the components in the trash heaps that abound in our world now.

Mulling it over, in the event of a worldwide collapse of technology, I wonder if I could make bread, but never mind ... and the earliest toasting devices were probably green sticks, the kind one would use to toast marshmallows (can you make a marshmallow from produce grown in your back yard?).

Toasting "fork"

The metallic age brought forks with wooden handles, and the lower image is one of those, albeit with a spiral wire to hold the bread, as opposed to the fork I recall. The fork I remember had a quick release lever to push the toasted slice of bread off the ends of the tines.

Why anyone would want a facsimile of an electric toaster in a world without power plants is beyond me, but the TED video was very funny and reminds us of our total interdependence.

Hehe ...

Father William = Mother Ellen

You are old, Father William," the young man said,

"And your hair has become very white;

And yet you incessantly stand on your head--

Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,

"I feared it might injure the brain;

But, now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,

Why, I do it again and again."

Us and Them ...

Separation is a form of ignorance; when we see others as our enemies, or see the world in terms of "us and them", we are participating in the perpetuation of violence. As in feuding, the only way to end fighting and killing is to stop. Revenge is separation, and acceptance  is unity. This is not an easy solution, though it may seem to be simplistic and idealistic.

In fact, those who have stood for peace and unity are routinely slaughtered: Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, these people threatened the status quo when they advocated peaceful solutions to conflicts. They were killed for their efforts.

The current political atmosphere is one of a deepening divide between what we term "left" and "right" in the United States, and elsewhere. Neither is altogether good or bad in my opinion, and we have to take a step back and look at ourselves first, to make sure we are not demonizing anyone.

Oldified Magnolia!

Osprey posted an "oldified" photo of us from last summer, and I wanted to see this photo looking that way. They resemble silver gelatin prints or maybe an older process, not sure which, but this one looks familiar in texture to my eye.

Unretouched!

After a year of working on improving my diet, and continuing to do yoga almost every day, I feel better than I have in years. This year I am working on straightening my back. I have almost succeeded in straightening my right leg. It was twisted and splayed out to the side, and now it is nearly straight.

Rather than simply accepting difficulties like weak ankles, bad posture and knock-knees, in Iyengar Yoga we work on them, and over time, they improve.

No matter what the important thing is GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. My figure may never be perfect, but I am doing my best with what I have.

My Farm in Kingdom-Age

One of the reasons I enjoy Kingdom-Age is the humor, as in this pile o' pigs (with goat). My barn is ramshackle but I am ever so proud of it.

Authoritative Statement on Diet

Walter Willets of the Harvard School of Public Health: "If Americans could eliminate sugary beverages, potatoes, white bread, pasta, white rice and sugary snacks, we would wipe out almost all the problems we have with weight and diabetes and other metabolic diseases."

From Atomic-Raygun!

UPDATE-FINAL: Well everyone. You can give yourselves and Ted a high-five. He's being given offers hand-over-fist over the air. He'll be set for life.

My request to all. Whenever you run across a story such as this, don't assume it'll take a life of its own, on its own. It won't. It can't. There are too many other stories that drown out the one before it.

You need to spend time to get that story and its word out to many. If you care, you'll do it.

Keep the faith, pay forward and always lend a hand; even if you're the one who needs it.

God bless Mr. Williams. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him for sometime to come."

First Milestone of 2011!

B.K.S. Iyengar in Halasana (Plow)

B.K.S. Iyengar in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)
Today I attended the Level 2 Iyengar yoga class and we did Halasana (above, left) and from there, raised our straight legs into Sarvangasana (above, right). The last time I tried to do that I could not get my legs up and had to have the teacher push my legs into the upright position. That was maybe a month ago, and today I DID IT ON MY OWN STEAM! YAY! I get a gold yoga star on my belly button!

Milestones!

2010 Milestones:

I refrained from eating sugar for 2010, and lost a bit of weight (intentionally).

HWMNBMIMB and I visited Osprey, my sister Betsy, and one of my oldest and dearest friends, Tish.

I made several movies, including:
   Tiny Alien Invasion
   The Malted Bunneh
   The Reading

I did a series of vegetable / fruit mandalas, and hung them at the Houston Iyengar Yoga Studio.

Salazar Jack abandoned much of his land in the Forest of Kahruvel, so I purchased my plot at the seaside.

I started doing Level 2 yoga; I am taking two classes per week, one Level 1, and one Level 2.

If I think of more milestones I will post them.
